Change One Undesirable Habit

Changing many undesirable habits all at once is like trying to hit several tennis balls simultaneously. It’s just impossible. The truth is, if we focus on just one habit at a time, our tiny success in overcoming the undesirable habit will enable us to cause a ripple effect such that we will eventually change other related, undesirable habits.

When I was a child, I remember a story entitled, “The Magic Geranium.” It was about a woman whose house was very untidy, and who moped around the house all day long. (This is the description of a depressed person).

One day, her friend gave her a geranium, telling her that it was magic. The woman did not believe in magic, but since she did not want to offend her friend, she put the flower in vase and poured water into the vase. Then, she sat down to look at it.

While looking at the pretty flower, she realized that the table was too shabby, and decided to paint the table. Then, she painted the chairs, then the walls, and finally, she cleaned up the room. She cleaned the entire house, and even cooked dinner for her husband, something she has not done for a long time. The husband was quite surprised when he came home that night. “What happened?” He exclaimed. The woman answered, that it was all because of the magic geranium.

In real life, this kind of transformation does not happen in a matter of hours. However, the concept is there. Changing just one undesirable habit will cause a chain of reactions that will lead to a better person and a better life.

A little tweak of our eating habits can lead to better nutrition. Below is a suggestion for a meal. Just add good carbohydrates like brown rice or sweet potato (if you are not diabetic), and you’re good to go.

Have a great weekend!

New blog…

Dear Everyone,

Jimmy and I have decided to open another blog: http://thewholesomegourmet.wordpress.com/the-wholesome-gourmet/ to chronicle our foray into the world of nutrition. It will be a daily challenge. I might not be able to write as often in this blog site. Thank you all for reading and following my posts. I will still read and follow your posts, as your posts really make my day.

I have recently come to this conclusion: Bloggers are awesome!!! They are the friendliest lot!!!Image

Eternal Life Plan

I am watching the YouTube video of “Revealing Heaven by Kat Kerr.” I don’t know why these days, I feel drawn to reading books about heaven. I have a collection of these books, like “Heaven is For Real,” and “Heaven is so Real.” At one time, I even considered writing a book on heaven and hell, warning people to plan their eternal lives now. However, I realized that there are a lot of books on the topic, so I decided to read them all and write about those that speak to me.

When Kat Kerr mentioned about Eternal Planning, my ears perked up. She says that salvation is free, but the life we live now determines our eternal position. What does she mean by this? She says that many people do many types of planning; vacation, wedding, real estate planning to mention a few. But do we ever take the time to plan the most important one of all…eternal planning? When this is launched, it will never change. We can work towards it until we die, but afterwards, there’s nothing much we do about it.

She suggests: “find out what God’s purpose is for your life and accomplish it. He has a destiny for all of us. We will either rule or reign with Jesus Christ in the new earth, or we will serve others. We will be held accountable for what God called us to do with our lives. We have specific destinies. If we don’t know our specific purpose, we must seek God and He will reveal it to us. God gave us different gifts, talents, and grace to accomplish our purpose. We must make sure that our earthly life counts for the Kingdom of God. Our reward will be to spend eternity, ruling with Jesus Christ. “

She also adds,” love one another and work together. The world will know us for our love of each other.”

What are we waiting for? The clock is ticking. It’s time to start planning for eternal life, if we haven’t done it yet.

Tomorrow is Dragon Boat festival. Get your eggs ready! Have a great weekend!

Can You Believe This?

20120621-125321.jpg

This is a bag of chips containing different kinds of potato and other root crops. It claims to supply a serving of vegetables per ounce. Of course, we all know that potatoes and other root crops are not vegetables just as French fries are definitely not vegetables. However, I was hoping to find a healthier alternative to the regular chips. To my disappointment, the chips were greasy and salty. So, don’t be fooled like me, by the label when buying food.

It was wishful thinking on my part. I wanted so much to eat something crunchy and salty, but less sinful. This however, was a big disappointment. Junk food masquerading as healthy food is something each of us have to watch out for.

Happy eating!

Are You Ready?

Taiwan is bracing for not one, but two typhoons. Yesterday, the supermarkets were packed with people stocking up on vegetables and fruits. This is one of the reasons why I was unable to post.

The other reason is that I have been chatting with my very busy sister in the US. She told me that she can teach me how to dry and pack food. She travels a lot and does not like to eat out. She prepares her own food. That is how she kept slim and fit despite her stressful job.

This information is heaven sent, as Jimmy and I want to develop a more convenient program for weight management. The biggest challenge is how to get kids and adults alike, to eat vegetables three times a day. We have trained our boys to eat iceberg or Romaine lettuce, while we like to munch on celery. However, most of our clients can not copy this, as they want something cooked to start their day. I will be writing more on this in the coming days.

Anyway, back to the typhoon. Classes have been suspended, and people in landslide prone areas have been evacuated. Everyone is on high alert.

I can not help but wonder if we have the same readiness when it comes to eternal life. While going about our daily chores, do we often ponder on our eligibility to enter the Kingdom of God? Do we make time for God and ask for directions on how to lead our lives so that we may one day be with Him?

As imperfect creatures, it is but natural to gloss over these thoughts, and even to deny them. However, our mortality is an eventuality, and the sooner we face these issues, the better our chances for heaven will be.

So, join me now as we carve some quiet time alone with God. Despite our busyness, the most important One of all, is God.

Fastfood for Convenience

My son’s class went to a burger joint to observe how the food was prepared. This was part of their class project. Afterwards, the students ordered a meal of burgers, fries, and a large soda. To many of the students, it’s unthinkable to go to a fastfood restaurant and not order anything. So, they offered to share their fries and sodas with my son. My son was embarassed to refuse their offers, but he did it anyway, because of what I have been reading from a book entitled, “Fastfood Nation.”

For those of you who want to know more about what goes on behind the scene of burger and fries preparation, this book is a must read. I warn you though, that once you finish reading the book, you’ll never want to eat burgers and fries that are not homemade.

Most people know that fastfood is not good for the body. It is not natural. The body has difficulty digesting fastfood, so what it can’t digest, it puts into storage. Our belly, thighs, and underarms then become the warehouses where food that the body cannot utilize is stored. It’s as simple as this.

However, many of us (myself included before I changed my ways), think that a trip to a fastfood joint once in a while won’t hurt. Pretty soon, it becomes once a week, then thrice a week, and maybe daily when we find ourselves too busy to prepare our meals.

Furthermore, fastfood is cheap and we can eat it on the go. So, convenience, low price, and that enticing smell of fries create cravings that people who eat fastfood can not resist.

However, for us who have not eaten fries for years, we can’t stand the rancid smell of these chemically engineered food. It’s like a smoker and a non-smoker. A non-smoker can not stand the smell of cigarettes, but a smoker can. In fact, the smokers’ sense of smell is ruined.

So, back to the burger and fries story. It seems that this particular chain offers a scratch and win card for purchase of their food. The prizes include a car, gold jewelry, and an iPad. Hmmm. That’s very interesting. Sales must be down. Otherwise, if the food is good and sales is not a problem, why would they offer such big prizes?

11 more days before dragon Boat festival!

Thoughts on Manny Pacquiao’s Triumph

Many people might wonder why I am writing about Manny Pacquiao’s triumph. After all, Timothy Bradley was voted the winner in last Sunday’s questionable boxing bout, by two out of three judges.

For me, Manny still won in the hearts of his many fans, and definitely, the heavenly hosts think so, too. Manny never showed any signs of bitterness. He was still all smiles after the fight. It didn’t matter that many people believe this fight was rigged. It sure was painful for the family since this was the first time his children came to watch the fight. I feel for the children, who expected their father to win, but was not declared the winner. Anyone of lesser caliber would have succumbed to a meltdown. I probably might have.

But not Manny, who  said it was a test of his faith. He will stay strong and true to God. Only a man who has a strong faith in God can overcome the bitterness, frustration, and disappointment that is warranted in this scenario.

This sad story reminds me of a similar story many, many years ago. My younger sister was great at delivering speeches. She was the representative of our school in a Girl Scout meet, where she delivered a great oration. She was declared the winner and went on stage to claim her medal. However, someone protested because the first runner up was a PRISAA (one of those nationwide or regional competitions) winner. So, they physically removed the medal from her and gave it to the runner up, right there, on the stage!

My mother and my sister went home crestfallen. I was not able to attend because I was resting from a tooth extraction. When I heard about this injustice, I felt really bad. My sister did not dwell on it and went on to greater heights.

There are many stories out there of injustices. Life is not fair. However, God is fair. He sees everything and He will give everyone their due, in time.

I don’t watch the boxing fights because I am afraid of these. I just wait for the results. Like most, if not every Filipino, I want Manny to win in the ring. Manny is more than just a great boxer. He carries the dreams and hopes of the Filipino nation on his shoulders.

I am proud of Manny Pacquiao, not just because he is one of the (if not the) greatest boxers who ever lived, but because he is the model of a great athlete. What is a great athlete? A great athlete is one who, when he enters the locker room after the sports event, is still smiling. A spectator who did not see the match can not tell whether he won or  not. His faith in God does not depend upon the decision of any mortal. In his heart, he knows that he won the game for God.

Manny Pacquiao, you are a champion! You will always be a champion of the Lord! Godspeed!
